What to Wear for Family Photos in the Pacific Northwest

Choosing outfits for family photos can feel surprisingly stressful. You want everyone to look good together without looking overly matching or stiff. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated.
After photographing many families across the Pacific Northwest, I’ve found that the best outfits are simple, comfortable, and inspired by the natural colors around us. Think of house colors around Portland, Oregon and you'll notice that what "goes" with the natural surroundings are earth tone colors - wood, browns, creams, blues. A bright pink house would stand out in the PNW but not as much somewhere tropical. Same with clothing for a photoshoot. You want to choose a color palette that fits with the natural scenery and the chances are - these will most likely already be in your closet, even if you are prone to wearing bright colors most of the time.
Here are a few guidelines to help your family look natural and timeless in photos.
Start with Mom’s Outfit First
If you’re unsure where to start, choose mom’s outfit first.
Pick something you feel beautiful and comfortable in. Flowy dresses, textured fabrics, and soft layers tend to photograph beautifully and move naturally with the wind or while holding your kids.
Once you’ve chosen your outfit, build everyone else’s clothing around those colors.
Another place to start could be around your child's favorite outfit and go from there.
Choose a Coordinated Color Palette
Instead of matching outfits, aim for colors that complement each other.
Some color palettes that work especially well in the Pacific Northwest include:
Cream, tan, and soft browns
Olive green, rust, and mustard
Soft blues and denim with neutrals
Earth tones like sage and beige
These colors blend beautifully with forests, fields, and mountain landscapes that I often photograph in or around Portland.
Here are some SAMPLE color palettes to give you an idea.

Avoid Large Logos and Neon Colors
Clothing with big logos, graphics, or neon colors tends to pull attention away from what matters most — your family.
Neutral tones and subtle patterns photograph more timelessly and keep the focus on connection and emotion.
Think About Movement and Texture
Photos feel more natural when clothing has some movement and texture.
Consider:
Linen, wool, or cotton fabrics
Knit sweaters
Flowy dresses
Layers like cardigans or jackets
These details add visual interest without distracting from the moment.

Let Kids Be Comfortable
Kids are happiest when they can move, explore, and be themselves.
Choose outfits that allow them to run, climb, and snuggle easily. When kids feel comfortable, the photos will reflect that joy.

Don’t Stress About Perfection
The most meaningful photos rarely come from perfectly posed moments.
They come from laughter, snuggles, wandering through tall grass, or your child reaching for your hand.
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s capturing your family as you are in this season of life.
